PCO is clouding of the capsule (think “skin”) that surrounds your plastic (acrylic) intraocular lens implant. PCO only forms once Cataract Surgery has been undertaken and can take months, years or sometimes decades to develop. It is very important to clarify that PCO decreases vision due to the build up of cells behind the lens implant. It does not mean that your lens implant has become clouded or developed a fault. It occurs in 10-50% of eyes following cataract surgery.
YAG LASER CAPSULOTOMY RECTIFIES THIS.
During cataract surgery the capsule around the lens is opened so that the cloudy human lens (cataract) can be removed. We create a circular opening in the front of the capsule to enable us to remove the cataract through this opening and insert the new intraocular lens implant back through the same opening. The new lens implant then remains inside the existing capsule and uses its natural strength for support.
Over time, microscopic residual cells of the cataract can replicate. The lens is designed to limit the spread of these cells but often they migrate to the centre of the posterior capsule and cause obscuration of light passing through the lens. This in turn can reduce your vision or cause glare / streaks in your vision.
The treatment is performed sat in a chair in outpatients. It takes less than 5 minutes per eye.
Anaesthetic drops are used to numb the front of the eye. The laser does not "burn" or "blast" - it uses very precise energy application to push away the cloudy cells behind the lens implant.
The procedure has a very low risk profile. No eye drops are needed after the procedure and vision is restored within 2 hours for most patients
